What is a genderless connection?
Single-use connections typically involve a male and female half - two distinctly different parts that mate with each other. These types of connections are considered gendered. Genderless connections, on the other hand, are those in which the connector halves are identical in design, eliminating the need for different male and female halves to make the connection.
What are the benefits of having a genderless connector?
1. The ability to connect any two connector halves
Using genderless connectors eliminates the possibility that two connectors cannot be mated. This is especially important if you are developing a single-use system with components from different OEM suppliers. Determining which supplier uses the male connector and which one uses the female can be eliminated by using genderless connections. Sometimes, unfortunately, connector type is something not considered until the end of the project when it may be too late to make a change.
2. Fewer SKUs
Keeping inventory down is always a good thing, and using genderless connectors allows you to inventory fewer components. Fewer SKUs can result in a simpler ordering process, a reduction of inventory and minimizes the risk of ordering the wrong components or assemblies. With a gendered connector, there are three possible combinations; a female connector on each end, a male connector on each end, a male connector on one end and a female connector on the other. With a genderless connector, there is only one possibility for a tube set - a genderless connector on each end.
